Alicia Sacramone Biography

 

 

Alicia Sacramone was born on December 3, 1987 in Boston, Massachusetts to parents Fred, who is an ordodontist, and Gail Sacramone. She is of Italian descent and she also has an older brother, Jonathan.

 

Alicia Marie Sacramone is an American artistic gymnast who has succeeded in various gymnastics competitions. Not only is she a member of the U.S. National Team, she is also a member of the 2008 U.S. Olympics team which finished silver to China.

 

Alicia Sacramone was the 2005 World Champion on floor exercise, the 2008 U.S. National Champion on vault and also a seven-time medalist at the World Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

 

Sacramone began gymnastics at the age of eight, but she started studying dance since the age of three. Yes, they always start young! She began competing at the elite gymnastics ranks in 2002 and soon joined the U.S. National Team in 2003. Since 2005 she has won two World Championship titles and seven World Championship medals with the U.S. team.

 

Shannon Miller and Nastia Liukin are the only American gymnasts to hold more World Championship medals than Sacramone.

Her Early Gymnastics Career

 

Sacramone began studying dance at the age of three and started gymnastics at the age of eight. She began her gymnastics career training with Romanian coaches Mihai and Silvia Brestyan. Till this very day the Brestyans are still serving as Sacramone's coaches.

 

Sacramone entered the elite gymnastics ranks in 2002. She finished seventh in the all-around and sixth on the vault in the junior division at that year's U.S. Classic competition. Later in the same year when she competed in the 2002 U.S. National Championships, she placed 22nd, but achieved a seventh place finish on the balance beams.

 

The following year is when she took giant steps when she placed 14th in the all-around and won a bronze medal on the vault at the 2003 U.S. Nationals where she earned a spot on the U.S. National Gymnastics team.

 

In 2003, Sacramone also competed in her first international competition, the Massilia Cup in France, where she placed fourth on floor exercises and ninth on vault.
